Curtain Fading Time Again – Daylight Savings Is BACK!

It’s the time of year that Queenslander’s dread (sorry) when us southerners adjust our clocks and have an extra hour of daylight up our sleeves.

And to make it worse (for them), it’s starting earlier and finishing later than ever before!

In the ACT, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, daylight savings begins this coming weekend, at 2.00am EST on Sunday October 5th. And this time, it goes right through to 3.00am on Sunday 5 April 2009.

In Western Australia, they begin their 3rd and final “trial” year of daylight savings on 26th October, and it ends for them at 3.00am on Sunday 29th March 2009.

If, like me, you have difficulty remembering whether the clocks go forward or back, then just remember this little gem!

Spring forward… (clocks go forward)
Fall (as in Autumn) back. (clocks go back)

And you’ll never be lost for time again!

That is… unless you live in Queensland or the Northern Territory… but you guys get enough sun up there, so you really don’t want any more!!!

Lucky you, we here on the northern half of the planet just had to switch back for an hour (now we are on normal (winter) time).

Getting dark too early – not long and it will be like getting off to work in the dark and returning in the dark as well – good time to make vacation plans to nice warm and sunny destinations.

We’ve still got a lot of people in Oz who are anti daylight savings… mostly from our “sunshine” state of Queensland. They must think they get enough of it up there :)

For the life of me, I can’t understand why we don’t have it in WINTER – that’s when you need an extra hour in the afternoon/evening – sure would beat the sun going down at 4.45pm!!!

    Cheers
    Stephen

    Hi ,
I have thought of a solution to the divisive issue of daylight saving. During summer the standard working hours should be increased by 1 hour in the morning in all states and people can decide either to work an hour earlier if they like daylight saving or work later as per usual if they prefer more early morning time at home as I do. This would only be like flexi time and any problems could be solved with rostering. Clocks would not have to be changed, business would be happy to be synchronized and everybody would be happy.
    Regards Keith Richardson.

We seem to rush into daylight savings at the wrong time of year and far to early. Winter seems to be the obvious time to change the clocks, if any. At present we change at a time when our days are getting longer anyhow. In mid November the daylight will be still evident at 8pm when it should really be 7pm. Try getting your kids to bed when it’s still daylight. Why not try a comprimise and trial daylight savings in the winter, and let the natural progression of daylight in summer be experienced. Take advantage of the earlier sunrise.

What’s interesting is that I am now living in Queensland… and did NOT have to deal with daylight saving last summer – I actually found it quite refreshing for some reason.

However there were enough problems as I live on the border near Tweed Heads/Coolangatta, so the time zone frustrations simply because of that are monumental LOL
